Yvette Flunder

Yvette A. Flunder is an American bishop, pastor, theologian, author, gospel singer, and activist whose ministry has reshaped conversations around faith, sexuality, HIV/AIDS, and social justice. A native of San Francisco and a third-generation preacher, she grew up in the Church of God in Christ before joining Love Center Ministries, where she was ordained by Bishop Walter Hawkins and served as an associate pastor and lead singer with the Love Center Choir. She later earned ministry degrees from Pacific School of Religion and a Doctor of Ministry from San Francisco Theological Seminary.

In response to the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s, Flunder established Ark of Refuge, Inc., providing housing and support services for people affected by HIV/AIDS. She helped found City of Refuge United Church of Christ in 1991, creating an affirming congregation that integrates Christian ministry with community outreach and radical inclusion. She later founded The Fellowship of Affirming Ministries, expanding a network of churches and faith-based organizations committed to inclusive theology, leadership development, and social justice. Her book Where the Edge Gathers: Building a Community of Radical Inclusion explores the intersection of Christian community, sexuality, gender, and marginalization.

Flunder has spoken publicly about her identity as a Black lesbian woman and her long-term marriage and ministry partnership with gospel artist Shirley Miller. Through preaching, writing, teaching, advocacy, gospel music, and mentorship, she continues to champion radical inclusion, racial justice, HIV/AIDS advocacy, and compassionate ministry while inspiring new generations of faith leaders.
