Sokari Ekine

Sokari Ekine is a Nigerian writer, journalist, editor, photographer, and LGBTQ+ activist whose work has played a pivotal role in documenting African queer lives, feminist movements, and digital activism. Born in Nigeria and later based in Barcelona, Spain, she has spent decades using journalism, photography, and online publishing to amplify voices often excluded from mainstream narratives about Africa, gender, and sexuality.

Ekine is the founder and longtime editor of Black Looks, an influential independent platform covering African politics, feminism, LGBTQ+ rights, social justice, and digital activism. Through essays, interviews, commentary, and visual storytelling, Black Looks provided critical coverage of grassroots movements across Africa while challenging colonial and Western assumptions about African societies and identities.

She is the co-editor of Queer African Reader, a landmark anthology bringing together essays, interviews, fiction, poetry, and personal narratives from LGBTQ+ Africans and allies across the continent and the diaspora. The collection has become an important resource within African queer studies and global LGBTQ+ scholarship. In addition to her editorial work, Ekine is an accomplished photographer whose long-term project Fissures documents Black identities, migration, memory, and belonging through visual storytelling. As an openly lesbian writer and activist, she continues to advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, digital freedom, and social justice through interdisciplinary creative practice.
