Biography
Sidra Smith is an American filmmaker, producer, screenwriter, and entrepreneur whose work spans independent film, documentary, television, and cultural programming. Raised in Harlem, New York, she has built a career dedicated to telling stories that center Black experiences, women's perspectives, and underrepresented communities. Her productions frequently explore themes of identity, family, resilience, and social change while elevating voices often overlooked in mainstream media.
Smith is best known as the writer, director, and producer of A Luv Tale, a landmark Black lesbian romantic drama that received national distribution and helped redefine representation within independent Black LGBTQ+ cinema. She created the film after recognizing the lack of authentic Black lesbian and queer stories on screen, and later reimagined it as a television series for BET+. She also produced the award-winning documentary Free Angela and All Political Prisoners, chronicling the life and activism of Angela Davis, and has developed numerous film and television projects through her production company, 3 Sisters Entertainment.
Beyond filmmaking, Smith has worked internationally as a producer, entrepreneur, educator, and cultural storyteller. Her projects have included documentary work in Ghana and initiatives supporting African diasporic storytelling. Through filmmaking, producing, mentorship, and advocacy, she continues to champion independent creators and expand opportunities for more inclusive storytelling across the entertainment industry.
