Shayna McHayle (Junglepussy)
Biography
Born in East New York, Brooklyn, Shayna McHayle developed her career as an independent rapper under the name Junglepussy. She began rapping in high school with a group called Primp and later attended the Fashion Institute of Technology. Her first track under the Junglepussy name, “Cream Team,” was released in 2012. The song helped establish the distinctive musical persona that would become associated with her independent career.
Her first mixtape, Satisfaction Guaranteed, was released in 2014, followed by the studio album Pregnant with Success in 2015. She released JP3 in 2018 and JP4 in 2020. Her music has explored self-expression, sexuality, vulnerability, independence, and expectations placed on Black women. In discussing JP3, Pitchfork described the album as a shift toward self-affirmation and personal fulfillment, while The Guardian later examined McHayle's rejection of the expectation that women should be confined to a single public persona.
McHayle expanded into acting with her role as Danyelle in Support the Girls (2018). She later appeared as Carlita in The Perfect Find (2023) and played the character Junglepussy in Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another (2025). Anderson wrote the latter role specifically for McHayle after becoming familiar with her music.
