Phumi Mtetwa
Biography
Phumi Mtetwa became involved in anti-apartheid activism as a teenager, including organizing a rent boycott in her community. She moved to Johannesburg in 1991 and became involved with the Gay and Lesbian Organisation of the Witwatersrand. In 1994, she co-founded the National Coalition for Gay and Lesbian Equality, which fought for sexual orientation to be included in South Africa's post-apartheid Constitution.
Mtetwa managed the AIDS Law Project from 1994 to 2000 and served as Co-Secretary General of the International Lesbian and Gay Association from 1999 to 2001. She later served as Director of the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project until 2011 and became Fahamu's first Activist in Residence scholar at the end of 2011. She also spent more than eight years living in Ecuador and participated in South American LGBTI forums.
Mtetwa currently serves as Regional Director of JASS Southern Africa, working on economic, gender, and LGBTI equality and justice and on feminist movement-building across regional and international contexts.
