Neo Sinoxolo Musangi
Biography
Neo Sinoxolo Musangi is a queer feminist artist, writer, and researcher living in Olkejuado, Kenya. Their practice moves between art, academia, and creative writing, using narrative, poetry, performance, and speculative approaches to examine how knowledge is produced and how inherited disciplinary traditions shape understandings of Black life, gender, sexuality, and history.
Neo is a founding member of the Black Planetary Futures Collective and has developed work that questions the boundaries between academic knowledge, artistic practice, archives, and lived experience. Their writing includes the 2018 Meridians counterpoint, Homing with My Mother / How Women in My Family Married Women, which uses family history and narration to think through Blackness, queerness, feminism, and alternative ways of engaging African queer histories.
Their current research and creative practice continues to investigate archives, speculation, Black theory, fugitivity, sexual dissidence, and the possibilities of incomplete or contradictory knowledge. Neo is currently developing the monograph Public Sex: Failure and Post|Colonial Mediocrity in the Biographical Archive.
