Monica Simpson
Biography
Monica Simpson is an American activist, organizer, singer, and spoken-word artist whose work centers reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ liberation, racial justice, and human rights. She serves as Executive Director of SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective, where she advances reproductive justice through organizing, advocacy, education, and movement-building.
Simpson helped launch Black Mamas Matter in 2015 and was a founding steering committee member of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance. She also created Artists United for Reproductive Justice in 2014, a SisterSong project connecting artists and creative expression with reproductive-justice advocacy. Her creative practice includes spoken-word performance and music, and she released her first solo album, Revolutionary Love, in 2015.
Her activism connects reproductive justice with Black feminist and queer liberation movements. Simpson has spoken publicly about her identity as a Black queer woman and about the importance of queer liberation within reproductive-justice organizing. Her work has helped build platforms for Black women, queer people, and other communities whose experiences have historically been marginalized in reproductive health and rights conversations.
