Meshell Ndegeocello

Biography

Meshell Ndegeocello is an American singer-songwriter, bassist, composer, and activist whose genre-spanning work incorporates jazz, soul, funk, R&B, rock, hip-hop, and experimental approaches. Born in Berlin and raised in Washington, D.C., she developed her musicianship through the city's go-go scene before moving to New York and establishing herself as a recording artist and collaborator.


Her debut album, Plantation Lullabies (1993), earned three Grammy nominations and established her as a distinctive voice in contemporary music. Across albums including Peace Beyond Passion (1996), Bitter (1999), and The World Has Made Me the Man of My Dreams (2007), Ndegeocello has explored sexuality, race, spirituality, politics, love, and social justice through an evolving musical vocabulary.


Her later work has increasingly incorporated jazz and experimental approaches. Ventriloquism (2018), a collection of interpretations of songs by artists including Prince, George Clinton, Sade, and Force M.D.'s, was nominated for the 2019 Grammy Award for Best Progressive R&B Album. The Omnichord Real Book (2023) won the 2024 Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album. Her multidisciplinary project No More Water: The Gospel of James Baldwin (2024), inspired by Baldwin's writing and legacy, won the 2025 Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album.
