Linda Magano Baumann
Biography
Born in Windhoek in 1982, Baumann became involved in community service and volunteer work at a young age. She volunteered with organizations including the Namibian Red Cross, Namibian Planned Parenthood Association, and Namibian Girl Child Organisation during her school years. She later worked with The Rainbow Project, where her responsibilities included outreach, media work, and human-rights documentation.
Baumann became a leader of Out-Right Namibia and later took on regional LGBTQ+ advocacy through Pan Africa ILGA, representing Southern Africa in the organization's leadership. In 2012, she delivered a joint NGO statement on behalf of ILGA at the United Nations Human Rights Council addressing human-rights violations based on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Baumann has continued working across LGBTQ+ rights, women's rights, media, and human-rights advocacy. She has been involved with the Namibia Diverse Women's Association and has contributed to research and public education concerning discrimination against LGBTQ+ people. In 2024, she co-edited The Digital Closet, a study examining online hate speech targeting Namibia's LGBTQ+ community.

Baumann's significance to BQW lies in her sustained leadership as an African lesbian activist working across LGBTQ+ rights, feminism, human rights, and community organizing. She has helped connect Namibia's LGBTQ+ movement with regional African networks and international human-rights institutions.
Her work has expanded the visibility of lesbian leadership within Namibian public life. Through advocacy, media engagement, human-rights documentation, and organizational leadership, Baumann has challenged discrimination while creating avenues for LGBTQ+ people and women to participate in broader struggles for equality and social justice. She received the 2019 African Feather of the Year for her human-rights and communications activism.
