Khadija Mbowe
Biography
Mbowe is a multidisciplinary artist whose creative practice spans video essays, music, podcasting, theatre, performance, writing, and education. Their work examines race, gender, sexuality, popular culture, and the social forces shaping contemporary life.
Mbowe studied music at the University of Toronto and developed an online audience through video essays and cultural commentary addressing topics including race, gender, sexuality, media representation, and pop culture. Their work has been featured by Georgia Public Broadcasting, NPR-affiliated programming, YR Media, and other media and cultural organizations.
Mbowe also works in music and performance. They founded Operatika, a multidisciplinary performance company combining opera, burlesque, and pole dance, and co-founded The Marigold Music Program, a music initiative focused on creating opportunities for marginalized youth.
Mbowe identifies as nonbinary and lesbian and has spoken publicly about their experiences with gender, sexuality, Black identity, and coming out. Their creative practice brings these perspectives into conversations about culture, representation, and community.
