Kelela Mizanekristos
Biography
Kelela Mizanekristos was born in Washington, D.C., and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland, in a family of Ethiopian immigrants. In a 2023 interview, Kelela described herself as a second-generation Black American and discussed the intersections of being Black, Ethiopian American, a woman, and queer.
Kelela's music emerged from the intersection of R&B, electronic music, and club culture. The 2013 mixtape Cut 4 Me introduced Kelela's experimental approach to R&B through collaborations with electronic and club producers, followed by the Hallucinogen EP in 2015 and debut studio album Take Me Apart in 2017. Raven, released in 2023, further explored Black dance-music traditions and club spaces. In The Blue Light (2025) presented live and reworked interpretations of earlier material, while new avatar, released July 10, 2026, expanded Kelela's sound into additional rock and guitar-driven influences.
Kelela's work has continued to engage with Black music history, queer identity, intimacy, and contemporary club culture. Kelela has also spoken publicly about Black womanhood, Ethiopian American identity, and queerness, providing context for the cultural and personal dimensions of the music.
