Joy Oladokun
Biography
Joy Oladokun began playing guitar at age 10 after seeing Tracy Chapman perform. Raised in Arizona by Nigerian immigrant parents, she initially pursued music through church and songwriting before establishing her professional career in Nashville. Her songwriting draws from folk, R&B, pop, rock, country, and Americana, combining intimate storytelling with broader reflections on identity, faith, and belonging.
Oladokun built her early catalog independently with Cathedrals (2015) and Carry (2016), followed by the independently released in defense of my own happiness (the beginnings) (2020) and her 2021 major-label debut, in defense of my own happiness. She subsequently released Proof of Life (2023) and OBSERVATIONS FROM A CROWDED ROOM (2024), developing a genre-crossing body of work that moves between personal reflection and social commentary.
Oladokun made her Grand Ole Opry debut on December 2, 2025. In 2026, she announced Hope Is A Heavy Thing, a forthcoming 12-track album scheduled for September 25, with production by Oladokun and contributions from Nigerian producer Spellz and Nigerian artist Adekunle Gold.

Joy Oladokun expands Black queer representation within contemporary country, folk, and Americana by bringing an openly lesbian perspective to genres where Black and queer artists have historically been underrepresented.
