Jovanka Beckles
Biography
Jovanka Beckles was born in Panama and immigrated to the United States with her family as a child. She earned a bachelor's degree in psychology from Florida A&M University and later an MBA from the University of Phoenix. After moving to the Bay Area, she built a career in mental-health services and worked as a Mental Health Specialist for Contra Costa County for two decades.
Beckles served on the Richmond City Council from 2010 to 2018, including as vice mayor, and later won election to the AC Transit Board of Directors, where she represented Ward 1 from 2020 through 2024. She was Richmond's first openly lesbian councilmember and became one of the region's prominent LGBTQ+ elected officials.
Following her public-service career, Beckles has remained active in community and public-affairs work. Her political career has included campaigns for the California State Assembly and California State Senate.
