Cappie Pondexter
Biography
Born in Oceanside, California, and raised in Chicago, Illinois, Cappie Pondexter established herself as a leading collegiate player at Rutgers University before entering the WNBA. She led Rutgers to back-to-back Big East championships in 2005 and 2006 and was named Big East Player of the Year and Women’s Basketball News Service National Player of the Year in 2006. The Phoenix Mercury selected her second overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft.
Pondexter played 11 WNBA seasons with the Phoenix Mercury, New York Liberty, Chicago Sky, Los Angeles Sparks, and Indiana Fever. She won WNBA championships with Phoenix in 2007 and 2009 and was named Finals MVP in 2007. She became a seven-time WNBA All-Star and earned three All-WNBA First Team selections. Pondexter also won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA at the 2008 Beijing Games and competed professionally overseas, winning Turkish and Russian league and cup titles.
Beyond basketball, Pondexter co-founded 4 Season Style Management with stylist Lisa Smith Craig, extending her professional work into fashion, image consulting, and branding. She also served as an Athlete Ally Pro Ambassador, supporting LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. Public LGBTQ+ media has identified Pondexter as an out queer WNBA player. In 2025, she was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame.
