Angelique V. Nixon
Biography
Born and raised in The Bahamas, Nixon has developed a multidisciplinary career spanning Caribbean studies, gender studies, literature, poetry, visual art, education, and activism. She has lived and worked in Trinidad and Tobago for more than a decade and is a Lecturer and IGDS Graduate Studies Coordinator at the Institute for Gender and Development Studies at The University of the West Indies, St. Augustine.
Nixon is the author of Resisting Paradise: Tourism, Diaspora, and Sexuality in Caribbean Culture (2015), an award-winning scholarly study of tourism, diaspora, sexuality, and Caribbean cultural representation. She also authored Saltwater Healing: A Myth Memoir and Poems (2013), a limited-edition poetry and art chapbook published by Poinciana Paper Press. Her creative work includes Troubling Identities, a mixed-media installation incorporating digital collage, photography, video, literary art, and poetry.
Nixon is a director of CAISO: Sex and Gender Justice, a Trinidad and Tobago organization working on LGBTQI+ rights and social justice. She has also contributed to the Caribbean International Resource Network's research and multimedia documentation projects concerning Caribbean sexualities and LGBTQI+ communities. Her academic, creative, and community work connects Caribbean feminist thought with queer politics, cultural representation, and advocacy.
BQW Impact
Nixon's significance to BQW comes from her sustained engagement with Black Caribbean women's experiences, queer identity, sexuality, gender, feminism, and social justice. Her scholarship and creative work challenge colonial and heteropatriarchal representations of Caribbean life while creating space for Caribbean women and queer communities to articulate their own experiences.
Through scholarship, art, poetry, and LGBTQI+ advocacy, Nixon contributes to documenting and interpreting Black queer Caribbean histories, cultures, identities, and struggles for equality. Her work connects academic research with community-based advocacy and helps preserve Caribbean queer knowledge that has often been marginalized within mainstream historical and cultural narratives.
