Angel McCoughtry

Biography

Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, McCoughtry attended the University of Louisville, where she played collegiate basketball and studied communications. She was selected first overall by the Atlanta Dream in the 2009 WNBA Draft and became one of the league's most accomplished players. She was a five-time WNBA All-Star, two-time WNBA scoring champion, six-time All-WNBA selection, and seven-time All-Defensive Team honoree. She was also selected to the WNBA's 2021 W25, recognizing the league's 25 greatest and most influential players.


McCoughtry represented the United States internationally, winning Olympic gold medals in women's basketball at the 2012 London Olympics and 2016 Rio Olympics. Her last WNBA season was in 2022.


After her final WNBA season, McCoughtry expanded her career into film and entertainment. She founded McCoughtry Entertainment, developing and producing stories centered on women, sports, and diverse voices. Her short film Bygones was directed by McCoughtry and is available on Prime Video. Bolted, a psychological thriller, marks her feature directorial debut.


McCoughtry also works in sports media. In 2026, she became co-host of Court Vision, a women's basketball program from Just Women's Sports. Her current work spans filmmaking, directing, producing, broadcasting, philanthropy, and storytelling.


BQW Impact

McCoughtry's significance to BQW comes from her visibility as a Black lesbian woman at the highest levels of professional and international basketball. In 2015, she publicly discussed her relationship with a woman after experiencing pressure while playing overseas to conceal her sexuality. Her decision to speak openly about her identity increased her visibility as an LGBTQ+ professional athlete.


Her transition into filmmaking and sports media extends that visibility beyond the court. Through McCoughtry Entertainment and her broader professional work, she has created additional platforms for women's stories and diverse perspectives while demonstrating the range of careers available to Black queer women in sports and entertainment.
