Alexis Pauline Gumbs

Alexis Pauline Gumbs is an American writer, poet, scholar, educator, and community organizer whose interdisciplinary work bridges Black feminist thought, environmental justice, spirituality, and social transformation. Through writing, teaching, and public scholarship, she examines relationships among Black life, ecology, ancestry, disability justice, and collective liberation, creating work that blends research, creativity, and community practice.

Gumbs is the author of acclaimed poetry, nonfiction, and experimental literature that invites readers to imagine new possibilities for justice and belonging. Her books draw on Black feminist traditions while exploring the interconnectedness of humans, oceans, marine mammals, and the natural world. Her work has earned widespread recognition for its innovative approach to scholarship, literature, and environmental thought.

In addition to her writing, Gumbs is the creator of Brilliance Remastered and co-founder of the Mobile Homecoming Project and Black Feminist Film School, initiatives that connect Black feminist scholarship with community practice, intergenerational learning, and cultural preservation. Through workshops, lectures, and collaborative projects, she continues to influence conversations on Black feminism, climate justice, queer liberation, and transformative social change.
