Aderonke Apata
Biography
Aderonke Apata is a Nigerian human rights activist, barrister, feminist, and LGBTQ+ advocate. Born in Nigeria, she sought asylum in the United Kingdom in 2004 after experiencing persecution because of her sexual orientation. Her case drew international attention during a thirteen-year legal battle that culminated in her being granted refugee status in 2017.
Determined to better understand the legal system, Apata studied immigration law while pursuing her own case. She later completed her legal training and was Called to the Bar of England and Wales in 2022. She holds a Master of Laws (LL.M.), a Master of Public Health (MPH), a Postgraduate Diploma in Law (PGDL), and is an accredited civil and commercial mediator.
In 2014, Apata founded African Rainbow Family, a UK-based charity supporting LGBTQ+ people of African heritage and LGBTQ+ asylum seekers. Through legal advocacy, public speaking, and community organizing, she has become one of the United Kingdom's leading voices for refugee justice, LGBTQ+ equality, and the rights of displaced people.
